AB History student, Mr. Eduardson J. Macorol, served as the guest lecturer of Manuel L. Quezon High School in Caloocan City on October 24, 2009.  Gracing the occasion’s Social Studies Month, he spoke of the difference between the masses’ concept of bayan and the Enlightenment’s concept of nacion.

The high school students were attentive to the speaker as he elaborated the near convergence of the two concepts in history.  Likewise, the students were active in the open-forum as shown by their act of expressing their reaction and asking questions for clarification to the speaker and by the evaluation conducted by Mr. Frederick Cerillo, the school’s head of Social Studies Department.

Mr. Macorol, a senior AB History student of PUP, is one of the few AB History students who has been given with an opportunity to lecture in a seminar.  He was awarded with a certificate of Recognition, together with Prof. Mc Donald M. Pascual, the adviser of PUPSMK, and Mr. Ian Louren S. Novelozo, an AB History student.

All students are, therefore, expected to be present in their respective classes effective on that day.

AB History’s pride, Mr. Eduardson Macorol and Mr. Patrick Rosende, two of the three students who constituted the group for the College of Arts (CA), emerged as champions for this years Philippine History, Culture and Arts Quiz that was held at the Balagtas Hall of the PUP Main Library on September 17, 2009.

Macorol, who is a senior AB History student, and his trainer, Prof. Joanna Aboga-Liao, claimed that the questions for this year’s quiz bee were out-of-these-world, making the participating groups from the different colleges   to acquire minimal scores.

“We tried our best though there were times that we were very uncertain with our answers,” he said in an interview.  “There were even times when we erased our answers because of uncertainty, yet, to our surprise, Prof. Mc Donald Pascual, the quiz master, would say in the end the same answer that we erased,” he added.

The 2nd place winner, the College of Languages and Linguistics (CLL), was heading the way after the initial question in the difficult round, with PUP Taguig closely following it.  The fifth and ninth questions, however, pulled the CA group from the third position to the top by correctly answering them.

The College of Languages and Linguistics and PUP Taguig have not scored after scoring for the first and fifth questions respectively.  The College of Arts, on the other hand, eventually maintained its leading position until the quiz bee was over.

The College of Arts earned 15 points while CLL and PUP Taguig got 11 and 10 points respectively.  Hence, CA has successfully defended its title from last year’s quiz bee.

AB History students in an activity during the Seminar on Planning and Leadership Training held in Antipolo City

The PUP Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Kasaysayan (PUPSMK), through the stewardship of its president, Mr. Melchor Pelleja, held its “Planning and Leadership Seminar” in Bretsch and Barrie Resort in Antipolo City on September 19 and 20, 2009.

The seminar aimed at nurturing the students on the rudiments of leadership.   Lectures as “Leadership Types and Styles” (by Prof. Anna Rose Fueconcillo-Hull), “How To Be A Good Leader” (by Mr. Jeffrey Hull), Responsibilities of Leaders (by Prof. Mc Donald M. Pascual), “Ethical and Spiritual Foundations of Leadership” (by Prof. Ma. Rhodora O. Agustin) were delivered on the first day of the activity to deepen the students’ understanding of leadership at large and their respective roles as officers in their organization.

A lecture on how to plan activities and how make documents such as business letter, minutes of the meeting, financial statement, and memorandum was given on the following day by Prof. Mc Donald M. Pascual.  The said lecture aimed at improving the students’ knowledge and skills in organizing and preparing activities and in making organization-related documents.

During the tw0-day occasion, games, fellowships and other activities were  also organized to strengthen the unity of the students, thereby inculcating on them the value of camaraderie and teamwork.

The occasion was participated by the officers and selected members of the PUPSMK.  It was also graced by Prof. Angel M. Duque, the chairperson of the Department of History, who delivered the inspirational message in behalf of Dr. Nenita Buan, the dean of the College of Arts.

Mrs. Aquino’s remains are to be placed beside the remains of her husband, the late Ninoy Aquino, whose death in 1983 sparked the debacle of the Marcos Administration.

The Aquino family are joined by thousands of Filipinos as they follow the funeral coursege from Manila Cathedral to Parañaque City.  The funeral entourage is expected to be marching in several hours before it would eventually reach the Manila Memorial Park.

Former President Aquino is remembered by the people as the president of the country from 1986 to 1992, ending the long dictatorial administration of the late strongman, President Ferdinand Marcos.

She is likewise remembered by her faithful service to the Filipino people, especially the underprivileged, and her identity as the forerunner of democracy in the country and the world.

The Department of History of PUP–its faculty members and students–joins the nation as it bids farewell to a great freedom fighter and icon, President Corazon Cojuanco Aquino.

2.  The Defense for the Thesis Proposals of the AB History 4-1 students has been postponed on June 30, 2009 (Tuesday).

The 10 areas submitted for accreditation, namely Area 1-Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives, Area 2-Faculty, Area 3-Curriculum and Instruction, Area 4- Support to Students, Area 5-Research, Area 6-Extension and Community Involvement, Area 7-Library, Area 8-Physical Plant and Facilities, Area 9-Laboratories and Area 10-Administration passed the AACCUP’s Minimum Area Mean.

Chair Duque congratulated the faculty members and students for a job well done.  He vowed to do all necessary measures so that the Department will pass the Phase 2 visit this November 2010 also with flying colors.  He stressed that “the triumph over the accreditation assures that there is excellence as far as historical studies in pup are concerned”.

Professor Pascual pointed out that the result of the accreditation is rewarding to both the faculty members and students.  “All the sleepless nights and the long-drawn-out preparation of documents have been supplanted with contentment and joy”, he said.

Earlier, the classrooms of AB History students have been completed with chairs and tables.  Now, the Department sees that all opening-related activities are smooth-sailing before it takes the initial step for the Level 3 Phase 2 accreditation this coming November.
